Nala’s new life began when she arrived at Ilima’s home heavily pregnant, physically depleted, and deeply afraid. Her breathing was strained, her body was weak, and even the safety of a foster home could not persuade her to relax.
Instead of exploring her unfamiliar surroundings, Nala retreated into her bed and stayed there. She appeared emotionally shut down, treating everything beyond her small protected space as a possible threat.
Nala Was Too Frightened to Step Outside
Ordinary routines became difficult during Nala’s first days in foster care. She was so reluctant to leave her enclosure that Ilima had to move the entire pen into the garage whenever the dog needed to relieve herself.
Small pieces of food were used to encourage her forward, but progress remained slow. Nala was not being stubborn; her behavior reflected a dog who had not yet learned that the people and environment around her were safe.
Ilima continued caring for her without demanding immediate trust. Nala was given time to observe, rest, and adjust while her foster caregiver remained close enough to provide support.
The first meaningful breakthrough came about a week after her arrival. Nala approached the couch, rested her head on Ilima’s lap, and looked up at her—a quiet gesture that showed she was finally beginning to seek comfort from another person.
Her Difficult Pregnancy Ended in Devastating Loss
Shortly after that moment of connection, Nala went into labor. She delivered ten puppies, but her weakened condition created serious difficulties for the litter.
Nala had experienced severe malnourishment before entering foster care. Her depleted body was unable to provide everything the newborn puppies needed, and nine of them did not survive.
Only one puppy remained. The survivor was named Mufasa, and Nala devoted herself fully to caring for him.
Despite her own difficult condition and the loss of the rest of her litter, she remained an attentive mother. She used the strength she still had to protect and nurture the energetic young puppy who had made it through those vulnerable early days.
Mufasa Grew Into an Energetic Young Dog
As Mufasa became stronger, his personality emerged. He developed into a lively puppy whose spirited behavior kept those around him busy.
Nala continued raising him until he was ready to begin a life away from her. Ilima eventually found a permanent family considered suitable for him, allowing Mufasa to leave foster care for his own home.
The separation did not appear to leave Nala distressed. After pregnancy, childbirth, the loss of nine puppies, and the demanding work of raising the sole survivor, she seemed ready to rest.
Mufasa was safe, and Nala’s responsibility as his mother had reached its natural end. For perhaps the first time in a long while, her days no longer revolved around fear, survival, or caring for a dependent puppy.
The Formerly Fearful Dog Discovered Television
Once Nala was free to settle into a more relaxed routine, her caregivers noticed an unexpected interest. The rescue dog who had once been unwilling to leave her bed became fascinated by glowing screens.
Her first source of entertainment was the television. Nala would sit close to the screen and watch novelas with remarkable concentration, appearing completely absorbed in whatever was happening in front of her.
Her habit became so noticeable that Ilima would gently tell her not to sit too close, much as a parent might speak to a child watching television. It was a lighthearted contrast to Nala’s earliest days in the home, when simply entering a new space had been frightening.
She Learned to Swipe Through Videos Herself
Nala’s interest did not stop with the television. She soon began paying attention to videos shown on an iPad and an iPhone.
Watching was apparently not enough. Nala learned that touching the phone’s screen could change what was playing.
When a particular video failed to hold her attention, she would press her wet nose against the device and swipe onward. Rather than waiting for Ilima to select something new, Nala began controlling her own stream of entertainment.
The behavior revealed how dramatically her state of mind had changed. A dog who had once withdrawn from nearly every unfamiliar experience was now curious enough to investigate technology and confident enough to interact with it.
Her screen-swiping habit became more than an amusing quirk. It showed that Nala finally felt secure enough to develop preferences, explore her surroundings, and enjoy simple activities without remaining constantly guarded.
The Foster Home Became Her Permanent Home
Nala was originally brought into Ilima’s care as a foster dog, but she never moved on to another family. She became so naturally integrated into the household that allowing her to leave no longer felt right.
Over time, she developed into a calm and dependable presence within Ilima’s group of dogs. Rather than remaining the frightened newcomer, Nala became the gentle older figure whose steady temperament helped balance the energy around her.
Her role in the household reflected both her resilience and her capacity to trust again. She was no longer hiding from life inside a bed or resisting every trip outdoors.
The home that had sheltered her through pregnancy, grief, and recovery became the place where she was finally allowed to stay. Ilima was no longer simply her foster caregiver; she had become Nala’s permanent family.
A Quiet Life After So Much Loss
Nala’s present-day routine is far removed from the condition in which she arrived. She now has soft places to sleep, regular care, companionship, and plenty of opportunities to watch—or personally select—the videos that interest her.
Her transformation did not erase the loss of nine puppies or the effects of the neglect she experienced before being rescued. It did, however, give her a future that was no longer controlled by those painful events.
Nala’s story is not defined only by what she survived. It is also found in the ordinary comforts she eventually learned to enjoy: resting near someone she trusts, living peacefully among other dogs, watching her favorite programs, and nudging aside any phone video that fails to impress her.
After losing almost everything, Nala was given the patience to rebuild her life without being rushed. The dog who once feared stepping beyond her bed now confidently decides what she wants to watch next—a small, funny freedom that carries the weight of an extraordinary recovery.
