Saria lay motionless in the wet mud at the edge of an abandoned construction site, her body no longer able to carry her away from danger. Around her, seven small puppies pressed against her stomach, still depending on their paralyzed mother for warmth and nourishment.

She had reportedly remained there for seven days after being struck and left in stagnant water. Although she could barely lift her head, Saria continued watching every movement her puppies made, refusing to withdraw from them even as her own condition deteriorated.

Caregivers also assumed responsibility for feeding the puppies. Warm bottles of formula gave the seven hungry animals the nutrition they could no longer receive from their mother.
