Sooni lay against the cold dirt floor of a damp makeshift hut, surrounded by the odor of spoiled food and the dimness of a place that offered little protection. At seventeen years old, the elderly mother dog was severely weakened, yet five newborn puppies remained pressed against her body, depending on her for milk and warmth.

A large swelling burdened one side of her frail frame. When help entered the hut, Sooni did not bark or attempt to move away; she only turned her tired eyes toward the doorway and released a slow breath, appearing to have no energy left for resistance.

 A Seventeen-Year-Old Mother Dog Still Caring for Five Puppies

Sooni’s age alone made caring for newborns physically demanding. Combined with poor living conditions, inadequate nourishment, and an untreated medical problem, the strain had reduced her body to a dangerously fragile state.

Her ribs were clearly visible, and producing enough milk for the litter was becoming increasingly difficult. Even so, all five puppies continued nursing while their mother remained almost completely flat on the ground.

The family needed veterinary attention, but removing them from the property was not immediately possible. The man who controlled the property said the puppies had already been promised to other people and initially refused offers of medical assistance.

For three days, the rescuer returned to the hut and continued negotiating. During that time, Sooni’s condition visibly worsened, making every delay more dangerous for both the elderly dog and the newborns relying on her.

 Permission Finally Came as Sooni’s Strength Disappeared

When permission was eventually granted, the entire family was gathered for transport. By then, Sooni was so weak that she could not lift her chin from the blanket beneath her.

The puppies were moved with her rather than separated and left behind. Their immediate safety remained tied to the survival of a mother whose body had already been pushed far beyond its limits.

At the veterinary clinic, brighter lighting made the severity of Sooni’s decline even clearer. The medical team began examining her while the newborn puppies were placed under the care of the rescue team.

The evaluation confirmed that the swelling was not her only medical concern. Blood testing revealed severe anemia, meaning her body was not carrying enough oxygen to support its organs properly.

Veterinarians also diagnosed advanced heartworm disease, further complicating her breathing and increasing the risks associated with treatment. The abdominal swelling required surgery to remove the affected tissue, but Sooni first had to become stable enough to survive the procedure.

 Two Blood Transfusions Gave Her a Chance

Sooni’s condition was too critical for the team to move directly into surgery. During the night, she received two blood transfusions while veterinary staff closely monitored her response.

The transfusions were intended to address the dangerous anemia and improve her chances of surviving the next stage of treatment. Without that support, her already exhausted body might not have endured the medical crisis.

While Sooni rested, the rescue team temporarily assumed responsibility for feeding her puppies. Each newborn received warm formula from a small bottle, allowing them to continue eating without placing further demand on their mother.

This pause gave Sooni something she had not been able to take for herself inside the hut: time to recover without five puppies drawing from her limited physical reserves. The litter remained protected and nourished while the clinic focused on stabilizing her.

 Surgery Carried Serious Risks for the Elderly Mother

Once Sooni’s vital signs became stable, the veterinary team prepared her for surgery. Her advanced age, heartworm disease, anemia, and extreme weakness all increased the risks of placing her under anesthesia.

The operation addressed the large swelling and included a procedure to prevent any future pregnancies. For a seventeen-year-old dog in such poor condition, the surgery represented a major medical challenge rather than a routine intervention.

Sooni survived.

After the operation, she did more than regain consciousness. She was able to stand independently, look toward the people waiting for her, and gently move her tail—small actions that showed a striking change from the motionless dog found on the hut floor.

 Recovery Began With Warm Meals and Rest

With the swelling removed and the immediate crisis under control, Sooni entered the recovery stage. She began eating warm homemade food with growing interest, and regular nourishment gradually restored weight and energy to her depleted body.

Her improvement did not erase the seriousness of her heartworm diagnosis or the strain she had endured. It did, however, show that the elderly mother could still respond when given sustained medical care, nutrition, and a clean place to rest.

As Sooni became stronger, her appearance and behavior changed. The hollow exhaustion visible in the hut gave way to greater alertness, a healthier frame, and more comfortable movement.

For the first time since the rescue began, she no longer had to use every remaining bit of strength simply to keep five newborns alive in an unsafe environment.

 The Five Puppies Grew Safely Beside Her

Sooni’s litter consisted of three brown male puppies and two white female puppies. In the clean nursery environment, they received dependable feeding, warmth, and protection while their mother continued healing.

The puppies grew stronger without having to remain on the damp dirt floor where they had been discovered. Their development was no longer limited by the shortage of milk or the instability of the hut.

As the puppies became healthy enough to leave rescue care, families came forward for them. One by one, all five moved into homes where they could begin lives separate from the hardship surrounding their birth.

Their adoption also brought an end to the immediate family crisis. Sooni no longer had to carry the physical burden of nursing, guarding, and sustaining the litter at the expense of her own failing health.

 Sooni Found a Permanent Home for Her Final Years

After her puppies were safe and her body had healed, Sooni did not return to the forgotten hut. She remained permanently with the rescuer who had continued visiting the property and negotiating for permission to save the family.

Her new life offered the opposite of the conditions in which she had been found. Instead of a damp floor, spoiled leftovers, and untreated illness, she received warm bedding, regular meals, medical care, and dependable companionship.

Sooni’s rescue was not secured through a single dramatic moment. It required repeated visits, difficult negotiations, emergency transfusions, careful bottle-feeding, high-risk surgery, and weeks of recovery.

The seventeen-year-old mother had remained alive long enough to protect her newborns, but endurance alone could not have saved the family. Their future changed because someone returned to the hut, continued asking for permission, and refused to accept that suffering behind closed doors should remain unseen.
