The soldiers had already seen how badly the little puppy was struggling. They had found her in a pile of trash beneath an overturned couch, unable to use her back legs and trembling in pain. Even so, she had not completely given up on people.
They called her Tiny Tammy.
Because the soldiers were deployed in the Middle East, bringing a stray puppy onto their base was not an option. They could not simply carry her inside and make her part of their daily life. Instead, they did what they could where she was—building a temporary shelter and returning with food and water.
Then Tammy did something none of them expected.
Despite being unable to walk normally, she dragged herself along the road toward the military base, using her front legs to pull her body forward. She was not wandering without direction. She was trying to reach the people who had been caring for her.

The Puppy Hidden Beneath an Old Couch
When the soldiers first discovered Tammy, she was hiding beneath an old overturned couch surrounded by garbage. Her back legs were not functioning, leaving her unable to move like a healthy puppy.
Army Sgt. Jack later described her as shaking from pain when they found her.
Her condition demanded veterinary attention, but the soldiers were operating in circumstances that made even a seemingly simple animal rescue complicated. Their location and military restrictions meant they could not immediately bring Tammy somewhere safe and keep her with them.
So they began with what was possible.
They made a makeshift shelter that offered Tammy some protection and continued bringing her food and water. The puppy responded to their presence even though her body could not express excitement in the usual way. She could not wag her tail, but the soldiers noticed a visible change whenever they appeared.

More importantly, Tammy continued showing an extraordinary willingness to trust them.
The clearest proof came when she made the difficult journey toward their base. With her back legs trailing behind her, Tammy pulled herself down the road to reach the soldiers.
For Sgt. Jack, watching the injured puppy make that effort turned concern into a commitment to find a longer-term solution.
He contacted Paws of War, a New York-based nonprofit that assists service members with animals they encounter while deployed overseas. Tammy’s case became part of the organization’s War-Torn Pups and Cats program, beginning the complicated process of trying to secure medical care and eventually move her to the United States.
Her Rescue Was Only Beginning
Tammy’s inability to use her back legs raised serious questions about the extent of her injuries. Proper veterinary evaluation was needed to understand exactly what had happened and what kind of care she would require.
But treating Tammy was only one part of the challenge.
Moving an animal out of a conflict-affected region involves far more than arranging transportation. The rescue organization said conditions in the area were dangerous and that overseas rescue operations had become increasingly difficult.
Still, Sgt. Jack had already decided what he wanted Tammy’s future to look like.

His hope was to bring her home to America after his deployment, where she could receive the care she needed and live somewhere safe. He had seen how hard she was fighting to survive and did not want the puppy’s story to end beside a road or underneath discarded furniture.
At the time her rescue effort was announced, that journey had not yet reached its conclusion. The mission to obtain medical treatment and transport Tammy remained underway. What had already changed, however, was that she was no longer facing her situation unnoticed and entirely alone.
The most remarkable part of Tammy’s story is not that her injuries suddenly disappeared or that everything became easy once she was found. Neither was true.
It was the determination visible in one small act.
A puppy who could not rely on her back legs still pulled herself toward the people she had learned to recognize as safe. The soldiers, in turn, responded by doing more than leaving food beside her shelter. They began searching for a way to give her a future beyond survival.
Tammy still needed medical care, transportation, and a safe destination. But after being discovered beneath an overturned couch in a pile of trash, she finally had something she had not had before: people willing to keep trying on her behalf.
