Furby Was Left With a Bed and Water Bowl—Then a Street-Feeding Trip Changed His Future

92

Furby was sitting quietly near his bed when two women noticed him in Houston, Texas. A water bowl had been left beside him, but there was no owner nearby and no sign that anyone was coming back.

The small, shaggy dog looked unsure of what to do next. His belongings suggested that he had once lived with people, yet he had been left at a location known for abandoned animals. For a dog unfamiliar with surviving on the streets, the situation could quickly have become dangerous.

His timing, however, brought him into the path of someone willing to stop.

Today I went to experience a new side of rescue. I’ve picked up many strays over the past decade but I’ve never gone street feeding. A good friend let me join her on her route and this baby is the very first dog we came upon. He was dumped with his bed and water bowl at a very popular dumping site. I’m so thankful @Pippy’s Pals said yes let’s take him because I can’t imagine what the streets are like for a dog who is so young and unaware of how to survive on his own. We will never know why his owner decided to dump him but he’s safe now and is going to live a great life from here on out! 🥹 We will be fostering him and once he has completed his vetting and is neutered he will be available for adoption! adoptdontshop fosteringsaveslives rescuedog houstontx houston

The First Dog They Found That Day

Brianna had spent years helping stray animals, but that day she was experiencing something different. She had joined a friend on a street-feeding route, and Furby happened to be the first dog they encountered.

Seeing him beside his bed and water bowl made it difficult to believe he was simply wandering through the area.

Rather than leaving him there, Brianna contacted Pippy’s Pals Rescue. The group agreed to take responsibility for his care, and Brianna brought him home as a foster.

Once indoors, Furby began showing just how comfortable he could be around people. He was given a bath to remove the dirt from his coat, and afterward he settled into the unfamiliar home with surprising ease.

Clean, warm, and dressed in soft pajamas, Furby soon fell asleep.

The contrast was immediate. Hours earlier, he had been sitting outside beside the few belongings left with him. Now he had a secure place to rest while the next steps in his care were arranged.

His rescuers originally believed Furby was a puppy because of his small size and youthful appearance. A veterinary examination later showed otherwise.

Furby was estimated to be between two and three years old. He weighed about 16 pounds and was identified as a Shih Tzu mix.

The veterinary visit also revealed hookworms. Fortunately, the condition could be treated, and Furby began receiving the necessary care. Plans were also made for him to be neutered before becoming available for adoption.

Foster Care Revealed Furby’s Real Personality

As Furby settled into foster life, the uncertainty seen on the day he was found began to disappear.

He proved friendly, affectionate, and playful. He got along well with other dogs and children, making it easier for the rescue team to understand what kind of home might suit him.

There was still no answer to the question that followed him from the beginning: why had someone left him behind?

No confirmed explanation ever emerged. His bed and water bowl provided clues that he had previously been cared for, but they could not explain the decision that placed him alone outside.

Instead of trying to invent an answer, his rescuers focused on what they could change.

Furby completed his veterinary care and became available for adoption. Interest in him grew quickly, and the rescue received more than 200 applications from people hoping to give him a permanent home.

The goal was not simply to choose the first person who asked.

The rescue searched for a family that matched Furby’s needs and eventually found one that included another confident dog who could help him adjust to his new surroundings.

Within weeks of being discovered beside his abandoned bed, Furby was adopted.

The Bed He Waited Beside Was No Longer His Only Safe Place

Furby’s story began with an image that raised more questions than it answered: a small dog alone in Houston with a bed and a bowl of water, seemingly equipped to wait but not to survive indefinitely.

His rescue did not depend on an elaborate operation.

Someone saw him during an ordinary street-feeding trip. A foster home opened its doors. A rescue organization agreed to help. Veterinary care addressed the health issue that was discovered. Then hundreds of people expressed interest in giving him what he had lost—a permanent place to belong.

Furby could not explain why he had been left behind, and that part of his past remained unresolved.

But his future did not.

The little dog who once waited beside a bed outdoors eventually had a family, another dog beside him, and a home where waiting for someone to return was no longer part of his life.
