The puppy could hear traffic moving through the darkness, but he could no longer follow it.

After being struck by a vehicle around midnight, the small dog lay injured beside the road, unable to use his hind legs. He cried out as people and vehicles passed, but help did not come immediately. With his back half motionless and his body shaken by the impact, he had no way to pull himself out of danger.

Eventually, Nils Ong and his wife noticed the injured puppy and stopped their car.

They did not know then that the frightened dog on the pavement would soon become part of their family.

A Rescue That Required Patience

The puppy was badly hurt and afraid of being touched. Instead of trying to grab him immediately, the couple stayed beside him for about 15 minutes, allowing him time to settle while they approached carefully.

Gradually, his resistance faded enough for them to lift him from the road.

Inside the car, he was finally somewhere warm and protected. The couple then took him for emergency veterinary care, where X-rays revealed severe trauma affecting his spine. The damage explained why his hind legs were no longer functioning.

The puppy, later named Codrut, faced a difficult prognosis. Walking normally again was unlikely, and caring for him would mean adapting to paralysis rather than waiting for a quick recovery.

Nils and his wife decided to continue.

Codrut received treatment aimed at keeping him comfortable and helping him build as much strength as possible. Medication, physical therapy, daily attention, and consistent support became part of his new routine.

His rear legs remained limited, but the rest of him began changing.

As the days passed, the frightened puppy became more relaxed around the people caring for him. His personality started emerging once pain and uncertainty were no longer the only things shaping his day.

The challenge was no longer simply keeping Codrut alive. It was finding a way for him to move through the world again.

Four Wheels Opened a New Chapter

On the 21st day after his rescue, Codrut received an important gift.

A sponsor provided two wheelchairs designed for dogs who could not properly use their hind legs. The lightweight frame supported his back end while allowing his front legs to propel him forward.

At first, Codrut did not understand what to do.

Moving with wheels required a completely different sense of balance. He stumbled, tipped over, and struggled to coordinate his front legs with the unfamiliar equipment behind him.

His caregivers stayed with him while he practiced.

Then the awkward attempts slowly began turning into movement.

Within days, Codrut was navigating his surroundings in the wheelchair with increasing confidence. Instead of remaining limited to wherever someone placed him, he could move under his own power again. His tail wagged as he explored, and the energetic behavior expected from a puppy began to replace the helplessness of that first night.

The wheelchair did not reverse his spinal injury. It gave him another way to live with it.

That difference became increasingly clear as Codrut learned to play and chase toys while supported by his wheels.

His rescuers were changing too. What had begun as an emergency stop on a dark road had become a lasting relationship.

On Day 33, Nils Ong and his wife officially adopted Codrut.

The puppy they had once carefully lifted from the pavement was no longer simply an animal they were helping through rehabilitation. He had a permanent home with the people who had stayed when leaving would have been easier.

By Day 50, Codrut had settled into family life. His wheelchair had become part of his routine, allowing him to remain active despite his paralysis.

Nothing about his recovery erased what happened that night. His hind legs did not suddenly regain normal function, and his injury remained part of his life.

But paralysis did not become the ending either.

Codrut went from lying beside a road with no way to move himself to racing after toys on wheels, surrounded by people committed to caring for him.

His second chance was not built around making him physically perfect. It came from recognizing that a different kind of life could still be a good one—and giving him the support to reach it.
