Gulli Followed a Scent Into a Flooded Ditch and Found a Puppy Running Out of Time

The rain had finally broken a long stretch of summer heat when Gulli, an energetic Wheaten Terrier, headed out with his owner for a familiar walk. The dry ground was soaked, the grass was wet, and every scent along the rural path had changed.

Gulli usually explored with easy enthusiasm, but near a wooded area beside a drainage ditch, his behavior shifted. He stopped, focused on something beyond the trail, and began pulling toward a thicket of wet, thorny brush. His owner tried to continue along the path, but Gulli would not leave.

Following him meant stepping down a slippery embankment toward a ditch that had filled quickly during the storm. At the bottom, cold, muddy water was moving fast.

Then they saw what had captured Gulli’s attention.

A tiny puppy was caught among exposed tree roots only inches above the rising water. She was about four weeks old, soaked through, covered in mud, and shivering violently. Her breathing was shallow, and her small frame was so thin that her ribs were visible beneath her wet fur.

There was no time to leave her there.

From the Ditch to Emergency Care

Gulli’s owner climbed closer, freed the puppy from the roots, and wrapped her inside a jacket before holding her against their chest. The goal was simple: get her out of the storm and begin warming her without shocking her weakened body.

The climb back up the muddy slope was difficult, but once they reached the car, the puppy was placed in a warmer environment while they drove to an emergency veterinary clinic.

Veterinary staff immediately began treating the young dog. Her body temperature was dangerously low, and she was also dehydrated, malnourished, and carrying a heavy parasite load. She was placed in an incubator, given warmed intravenous fluids, and monitored while the team slowly brought her temperature back toward normal.

The first twenty-four hours were uncertain.

Gulli and his owner returned home without knowing whether the puppy would survive the night. By the next morning, however, the clinic had better news. She had lifted her head, opened her eyes, and accepted warm milk from a bottle.

It was a small improvement, but it meant she was responding.

Over the following weeks, the puppy continued to recover. Her strength returned, the mud disappeared from her coat, and the frail animal found beside the floodwater began behaving more like a young dog. She became energetic, affectionate, and increasingly curious about the world around her.

The person who had carried her out of the ditch decided that the rescue would not end when she left veterinary care.

The puppy was adopted and given the name Clover.

The Dog Who Found Her Became Her Family

Coming home also meant meeting Gulli again—not as the dog standing beside a dangerous ditch, but as the adult dog who would now share his home with her.

The two settled together easily. Clover followed Gulli, played beside him, shared space with him, and grew from a critically weak puppy into a healthy companion. Their connection gave the rescue a fitting continuation: the dog whose nose had led his owner off the trail was now part of the family helping Clover build a normal life.

Months later, the contrast was hard to miss.

Clover was no longer a motionless bundle trapped above stormwater. She had a home, another dog beside her, and the safety to grow without fighting cold, hunger, or rising water.

Nothing about the day had begun as a rescue mission. Gulli and his owner had simply gone for a walk after the rain. What changed the outcome was the moment Gulli noticed something unusual and refused to move on.

His instinct led them away from the familiar path and toward a puppy they otherwise might never have seen.

For Clover, that detour became the difference between being left in a flooded ditch and growing up in a home where the dog who found her was waiting too.
