Lady watched the traffic from the ground, unable to lift herself out of the dirt. The small white dog had been lying beside a residential street for roughly 24 hours before someone finally contacted Hope For Paws. Cars had continued past her, but her injured body could not carry her to shade, shelter, or safety.
When a rescuer arrived, he found her near a trash can at the edge of the road. Her coat was badly matted and coated with dirt, making her look even smaller beneath the neglected fur. She was awake and aware of the stranger approaching, yet she made no attempt to run. Whatever had happened to her had left her unable to stand.
The rescuer moved slowly, knowing that a frightened dog in severe pain might react defensively. Lady did not snap or pull away. She accepted a gentle touch on her head and remained still as he assessed how to move her without worsening the injury.
A Careful Lift From the Ground
Picking Lady up in his arms could have placed dangerous pressure on her lower body. Instead, the rescuer spread a thick blanket beside her and gradually worked the fabric underneath her. Wrapped and supported, she could be lifted like a patient on a soft stretcher.
He carried her to the rescue vehicle and placed her on a padded surface for the trip to the veterinary hospital. It was a simple change of surroundings, but an important one: after a full day exposed beside the road, Lady was finally protected.
X-rays soon explained why she had been unable to move. Her pelvis was badly fractured, an injury consistent with being struck by a vehicle. The medical team focused first on stabilizing her and controlling her pain. Even though her tangled coat needed attention, bathing and shaving her immediately would have required too much handling while she was suffering.

For the time being, comfort came before appearance. Lady was given a warm, cushioned place to rest while treatment began and her body was allowed to recover from the trauma.
Once she was stable enough, she moved into foster care. There, healing became a quiet daily process rather than a dramatic overnight transformation. She needed restricted activity, continued supervision, and time for the damaged bones to mend. She also needed the ordinary things that had been missing when she was found: regular meals, clean bedding, patient attention, and a place where she did not have to protect herself.
The Dog Beneath the Dirt
As Lady’s pain eased, her caregivers were finally able to clean and groom her. The mud and tightly tangled hair were removed, revealing the bright white Poodle mix underneath. The difference was striking, but the more meaningful change appeared in the way she carried herself.

At first, every movement had been impossible. Later came cautious steps. As the weeks passed, those steps grew steadier, and Lady began to show the lively personality her injury had hidden. She wagged her tail, sought affection, and eventually ran across the grass with the freedom of a dog whose body no longer held her in place.
Hope For Paws worked with L.A. Animal Rescue to continue her care and find her a permanent family. A few weeks after her rescue, Lady was adopted.
In her new home, the dog once found motionless beside the street could be seen racing through a sunny yard, playing with toys, and rolling over for attention. Nothing about her energy suggested the helpless condition in which rescuers had first seen her.

Lady’s recovery depended on many people: the person who made the call, the rescuer who lifted her carefully, the veterinary team that treated her fractured pelvis, the foster caregivers who gave her time, and the family that welcomed her home. Her story does not erase the fact that she was overlooked for an entire day. It shows why noticing—and acting—matters.
For Lady, rescue began with one phone call. Everything that followed gave her back the ability to stand, run, and live as someone’s deeply loved companion.
