The puppy’s body looked far too fragile for life outdoors. Most of her fur was gone, leaving inflamed pink skin exposed to the heat, dirt, and insects of the Costa Rican streets. Her swollen belly suggested a heavy burden of parasites, and when the rescue team approached, she shook with fear.

She was not the only dog in urgent need. During the mission, rescuers also encountered another stray struggling with an injured leg and severely overgrown nails. Each step appeared painful, yet the dog had no choice but to keep moving in search of food and shelter.

These were among the vulnerable street dogs the team had come to find—animals surviving in places where tourists and residents might pass without realizing how serious their conditions had become.

Closing the Distance Without Force

The hairless puppy had learned to be cautious around people. Sudden movement could have sent her running, while an attempt to grab her might have deepened her panic. The rescuers lowered their voices, remained patient, and used small pieces of food to make their presence less threatening.

At first, the puppy kept her distance. Hunger drew her closer, but fear controlled every step. The team allowed her to set the pace, waiting until she was near enough to be secured with a rescue loop.

Once the loop was in place, the uncertainty of the street began to loosen its hold. The rescuers lifted her carefully and carried her to the vehicle.

The injured dog required the same measured approach. With one leg already causing pain, any struggle could have made the damage worse. The team secured the dog gently, supporting the body while moving the animal out of the dirt and into safety.

Removing the dogs from the street ended the immediate danger, but their physical condition made it clear that the rescue had only begun.

At the veterinary clinic, examinations revealed the work ahead. The puppy needed treatment for severe demodectic mange, secondary skin infections, malnutrition, and internal parasites. Her recovery plan included medicated baths to soothe the damaged skin, antibiotics to address infection, and a carefully managed deworming schedule.

The dog with the injured leg received treatment for the wound, while veterinary staff trimmed the overgrown nails that had made walking even more uncomfortable.

Both dogs—and the others helped during the mission—also needed something simple that had been missing for too long: reliable nutrition. Their meals were monitored as weakened bodies adjusted to receiving the protein and nutrients required for healing.

From Survival to Family Life

Improvement arrived gradually. The puppy’s angry skin began to settle, and the open areas started closing. As treatment controlled the mange, new fur appeared across places that had been bare. Her swollen belly became less pronounced as the parasites were cleared from her system.

The changes were not limited to her appearance. In the beginning, human contact had made her tremble. With consistent care, she began to understand that hands could bring food, medicine, and comfort rather than danger.

The other rescued dogs followed their own paths through recovery. Pain eased. Movement became easier. Tucked tails lifted, cautious animals began exploring, and quiet resting places replaced the constant search for somewhere safe to sleep.

Foster care gave them time to make that emotional transition. Soft beds, toys, regular meals, and gentle attention introduced them to routines they had never been able to depend on outdoors. No one expected instant confidence. Trust was allowed to develop through repetition: another meal arriving, another peaceful night passing, another person approaching without causing harm.

When the dogs were healthy enough to travel, the rescue effort expanded beyond Costa Rica. After receiving veterinary clearance, vaccinations, and microchips, they were flown to the United States through a coordinated international network.

There, they were matched with carefully screened families prepared to give them permanent homes.

Their journey was not a single dramatic transformation. It was a series of practical decisions made by people in different places: noticing suffering, approaching carefully, providing treatment, opening foster homes, arranging transportation, and completing adoptions.

For dogs who had once scavenged for each meal, those decisions created a life in which food, shelter, and affection were no longer temporary. The streets had taught them to expect very little. Patient care gave them the chance to learn that safety could last.
