An employee arriving for work at J. Rieger & Co. in Kansas City, Missouri, expected an ordinary morning. Instead, they looked toward the distillery’s roof and noticed a dog stranded high above the ground.

The animal had apparently spent hours exposed to severe early-March weather. He was cold, unable to climb down, and waiting for someone to notice him. What remained unclear was how a dog had reached the roof of a commercial building in the first place.

Security Cameras Revealed How the Dog Reached the Roof

Distillery employees turned to the company’s security footage for answers. When they reviewed the recordings from the previous night, they found a disturbing sequence captured at approximately 1:24 a.m.

The video showed the dog falling from above the building and landing on an outdoor tent positioned on the roof. He had not climbed up or wandered onto the structure through an accessible entrance.

After speaking with KC Pet Project, staff believed the dog may have been deliberately thrown from a nearby bridge. That explanation remained a theory rather than a confirmed account of what happened, but the footage made it clear that his arrival on the roof resulted from a fall.

The tent beneath him appears to have played a crucial role in his survival. Its material absorbed part of the impact and prevented the dog from landing directly on a harder surface below.

A Long Night in Freezing Weather

Surviving the fall was only the beginning of the dog’s ordeal. The security footage showed him moving around the edge of the roof while apparently searching for a way to escape.

With no safe route down and worsening weather around him, the dog eventually found a narrow sheltered area beneath a large air-conditioning unit. He pressed himself into the space, where the equipment offered some protection from the freezing wind.

He remained there through the night until the distillery employee discovered him the following morning. By then, he had endured both a dangerous fall and hours of exposure to harsh conditions.

Distillery Employees Called for Help

The staff at J. Rieger & Co. quickly contacted KC Pet Project to arrange a safe rescue from the roof. The distillery already had a connection to animal-rescue work through sponsored events, and its company mascot, Pepper, is also a rescue dog.

Once rescuers reached the stranded animal, they found him receptive to their help. He did not respond aggressively and allowed the team to carry him away from the dangerous location.

The employees named him Rieger after the distillery where he had been found. The name marked the place where his frightening night ended and his recovery began.

Rieger Escaped Without Broken Bones

Considering the height of the fall and the conditions he faced afterward, Rieger’s medical evaluation brought unexpectedly positive news. He was found to have no broken bones.

The outdoor tent, the sheltered space beneath the air-conditioning equipment, and the timing of the employee’s discovery all appear to have contributed to his survival. Although the full circumstances behind the fall were not confirmed, the security footage helped rescuers understand how he had become trapped.
