The puppy was lying near Jelena’s home on a brutally hot day, too weak and uncomfortable to behave like a healthy young dog. His body was thin, but his abdomen was stretched into an enormous round belly. Ticks covered his skin, and even standing had become difficult.
Jelena knew immediately that something was seriously wrong. She stopped beside him with food and cool water, then gently touched his head. Instead of pulling away, the puppy accepted the attention. He was exhausted and visibly unwell, yet he remained calm around her, leaning into the first comfort she could offer.

Getting Him Out Was the First Challenge
Helping him was more complicated than simply picking him up and leaving.
The puppy technically belonged to people, even though his condition showed that his basic needs had not been adequately addressed. After a rescue organization became involved and encouraged Jelena to continue helping, conversations followed with the people responsible for him.
Eventually, they agreed to surrender the puppy.
That decision opened the door to the care he desperately needed. The swollen stomach that had made movement so difficult could finally be treated, and the parasites covering and affecting his body could be addressed properly.
Jelena later recalled that his belly had grown to roughly the size of her head. The puppy received medication for the worms, beginning a recovery that depended on something remarkably small compared with the condition it was meant to correct.
There was no instant transformation after treatment began. His body had been weakened over time, and it needed time to respond.
Gradually, however, the swelling started to decrease.
As the pressure in his belly eased, his energy began to return. Small signs of improvement replaced the motionless exhaustion Jelena had first seen outside. The puppy who had struggled under the weight of parasites was beginning to move through the world more comfortably.
His appearance changed with his health. His coat became soft and fluffy, his eyes looked brighter, and his behavior became more confident. Rather than simply accepting help because he lacked the strength to do anything else, he began greeting people with the enthusiasm expected from a young dog.
Recovery Finally Let His Personality Appear
The biggest change was not just physical.
Once his body no longer had to devote every bit of energy to surviving, his personality had room to emerge. He became relaxed around people and comfortable receiving affection. The gentle puppy Jelena had noticed during their first encounter was still there, but now he had the strength to express happiness instead of simply enduring discomfort.
He did not have to wait long for the next stage of his life.
After recovering, the puppy was adopted by a family and settled into a home of his own. His first Christmas after the rescue was spent surrounded by care rather than outside in the heat with an abdomen swollen from worms. His new routine eventually included two walks on the beach each day—a striking contrast to the puppy who had once been too weak to stand comfortably.
Nothing about his rescue required an elaborate moment of heroism. It began because Jelena looked carefully at an animal near her home and understood that his condition was not normal.
She offered water. She stayed close. She helped make sure he could leave the situation he was in and receive treatment.
The medicine addressed the parasites, but recovery required more than a pill. It required someone to notice him first, people willing to intervene, time for his body to heal, and eventually a family ready to give him a permanent home.
By the end of that journey, the swollen belly, ticks, and overwhelming weakness no longer defined him. They became part of the distance between the puppy Jelena first found and the healthy dog now able to enjoy ordinary days with his family.
For him, that ordinary life was the real transformation.
