After Two Days of Running From Help, Angelo Finally Let Himself Be Held

Angelo had learned that hiding was safer than being seen.

The small Chihuahua had been surviving in a narrow trench beside a biohazard disposal company, surrounded by dust, weeds, debris, pipes, and hard surfaces. People had reported seeing the homeless dog searching for food, but when rescuers Eldad Hagar and Lisa Chiarelli arrived, getting close to him proved far more difficult than simply finding him.

Angelo was terrified of people. As the rescuers moved toward him, the little black dog barked, scrambled away, and searched desperately for an escape route. At roughly two years old, he was small enough to slip through spaces that would stop a larger animal. During that first attempt, his fear overwhelmed every effort to contain him. He even bit Eldad before squeezing through a hole in the fence and disappearing.

The rescue would have to wait another day.

The Second Attempt Had to Be Different

Eldad and Lisa returned rather than assuming Angelo could manage on his own.

They found him near the same hazardous area, hiding beneath what appeared to be a pipe. He was still wary, and the moment he realized people were approaching again, he tried to run.

This time, however, the rescuers had changed their strategy.

Instead of following him from one direction and leaving an obvious escape route, Eldad and Lisa approached from opposite sides. Their goal was not to frighten Angelo into submission, but to prevent another dangerous chase through the trench and give themselves a chance to secure him safely.

Angelo resisted at first. His barking and frantic movements reflected a dog who had spent weeks relying on distance and hiding to protect himself.

Then Lisa managed to place a collar around him.

For Angelo, that moment could have triggered another desperate struggle. Instead, something gradually changed. Once he realized the people beside him were no longer chasing him, his panic began to ease.

The rescuers stayed close and allowed him time to settle.

Minutes later, the Chihuahua who had done everything possible to escape was allowing them to touch him. Gentle petting replaced pursuit. Soon, he was calm enough to be picked up and carried out of the trench. Lisa gave the little dog the name Angelo.

A Bath Revealed More Than Clean Fur

Rescuers believed Angelo had been living outside for several weeks.

Once he was safely away from the dusty industrial area, one of the first visible changes came during his bath. Dirt from the trench washed from his coat, but adjusting to human care required more than getting clean.

Angelo needed to discover that people could offer something other than fear.

Eldad spent time introducing him to attention and play, giving the small dog opportunities to interact without the pressure that had defined their first encounter. The Chihuahua who had barked, bitten, and fled during the initial rescue began responding to contact with growing comfort.

Only a few days later, Angelo moved into foster care.

There he met three other dogs—Frankie, Lola, and Benji. Instead of hiding alone among dust and debris, he now had a safe environment, regular care, and canine companions around him. His body language changed with his circumstances. Later images showed a relaxed dog with a wagging tail, comfortable enough to enjoy the company surrounding him.

At that stage of the story, Angelo had not yet reached the final step of adoption. He was healthy and happy in foster care while waiting for a permanent family, with adoption arrangements connected to Shelter Hope Pet Shop in Valencia, California.

His rescue was not dramatic because of a serious injury or emergency surgery. The obstacle was fear.

For two days, Angelo treated every approaching human as something he needed to escape. That response had probably helped him survive while he was alone, but it also made accepting help extraordinarily difficult.

Eldad and Lisa did not mistake his fear for a reason to abandon the effort. They returned, adjusted their approach, secured him safely, and then gave him enough time to discover that the hands reaching toward him were not there to hurt him.

The little Chihuahua who once disappeared through a fence rather than be touched eventually rested in human arms.

Angelo did not change because someone forced him to trust.

He changed because, after weeks of surviving alone, he was finally given a safe reason to.
