Busya’s world was measured by the length of a metal chain.

The two-year-old dog, weighing only about four kilograms, had been left on a neglected property filled with trash, broken furniture, and overgrown weeds. She had recently given birth to five puppies—four females and one male—but only one remained beside her.

According to the rescue account, the owners had drowned the four female puppies. Still chained and unable to intervene, Busya was left with her only surviving baby. From then on, she guarded the little male intensely, frightened that he might disappear too.

A concerned person eventually reported the situation to a local animal rescue organization. When rescuers reached the property, they found a small, matted mother dog who was fearful and defensive around her puppy, yet clearly interested in human attention.

Before removing the animals, the team obtained permission from the owners.

Then the chain finally came off.

Mother and Puppy Left Together

Rescuers carefully picked up the tiny puppy, later named Buddy, before bringing Busya with them. For a mother who had already lost most of her litter, keeping the surviving puppy beside her was essential.

Both dogs were taken to a veterinary clinic for evaluation.

Buddy was estimated to be about six weeks old. Despite the circumstances in which he had spent his earliest weeks, the examination found him healthy and strong.

Busya’s body showed more evidence of neglect. The dirty collar around her neck had been rubbing against her skin, and she was physically exhausted. Veterinarians removed it and performed blood tests to look for infections, tick-borne illness, and other health problems.

Fortunately, the results indicated that Busya was generally healthy.

The veterinary team planned to spay her after Buddy had finished nursing and after she had enough time to recover physically. For the moment, however, the priority was allowing mother and puppy to rest together.

Busya also needed extensive grooming. Her coat was packed with dirt and tangled mats, so she was bathed, carefully brushed, and cleaned from head to paw. Her nails were trimmed and her ears attended to.

Beneath the neglected coat was a small golden dog who looked strikingly different once the dirt and tangles were gone.

More important than appearance, though, was what happened next.

Life Beyond the Chain

Busya and Buddy moved into a safe foster environment where their daily routine no longer revolved around survival.

There were soft beds instead of debris-covered ground, clean water instead of uncertainty, and regular meals that Busya did not have to search for. She could remain beside Buddy without constantly watching for someone to take him away.

At roughly a month and a half old, Buddy was also ready to begin eating solid food. Soft puppy food was introduced as part of the weaning process, reducing his dependence on his mother as he continued growing.

For Busya, recovery included discovering something completely unfamiliar: freedom of movement.

Her rescuers took her on leash walks through a green park. A dog who had spent her life confined to the limited circle allowed by a chain could now move across grass, investigate new scents, and walk beside a person without being tethered to one spot.

She adapted remarkably well.

Busya walked calmly with her rescuer and behaved peacefully when encountering other dogs. Away from the property where she had lived in fear, her gentle temperament became easier to see. She was affectionate, obedient, and increasingly comfortable with the people caring for her.

Buddy, meanwhile, was growing into an active young puppy without having to experience the same confinement that shaped his mother’s early life.

Their story had not yet reached a permanent home when their progress was documented. Busya and Buddy were ready for the next stage and waiting for families of their own.

That ending remained unwritten, but much had already changed.

Busya had gone from guarding her last puppy at the end of a chain to resting beside him in safety. She had lost four babies in circumstances she could not control, yet she had kept Buddy alive through the weeks that followed.

Rescuing them could not undo that loss.

It could, however, make sure their future was no longer tied to the place where it happened.

For Busya, freedom began with something almost ordinary: a collar removed, a chain unclasped, clean water nearby, and her surviving puppy still safely within reach.
