A mother dog was found beside a road in freezing rain, drenched, trembling, and unable to use her hind legs. The skin on her lower body had been rubbed raw as she dragged herself across the ground, yet her condition revealed only part of the emergency. Her full udders showed that four puppies were depending on her somewhere nearby.

Despite a catastrophic spinal injury, the paralyzed mother dog had continued moving. Her rescuers quickly realized that saving her would also require locating the litter she had fought so hard to protect.

A Search for Four Missing Puppies

The rescuers could not immediately take the injured dog away without first searching the surrounding rural area. With temperatures dangerously low, the missing puppies could not remain exposed for long.

For approximately an hour, the team searched through the area while listening for any sign of life. Eventually, faint cries led them to a thick patch of bushes, where they discovered four tiny puppies huddled together in the cold.

The rescuers believed the mother had hidden her puppies before pulling her damaged body toward the roadside, where she had a greater chance of being noticed. Although she could no longer walk, she had not remained beside the litter waiting for help to appear. She had used what little strength she had left to seek it.

The puppies were collected immediately, and the entire family was transported for urgent veterinary care.

Indra’s Spinal Injury Was Permanent

At the hospital, the mother dog was named Indra. Medical examinations revealed that her spine had been broken in half, causing irreversible paralysis below her waist.

The veterinary team described the trauma as exceptionally severe. Two complicated operations were needed to reduce her pain and reposition her damaged back, but the procedures could not restore movement to her hind legs.

While Indra was being evaluated, her four puppies also required close attention. Their bodies were so cold and weak that they initially struggled to move. Caregivers warmed them manually and fed them with syringes until they became strong enough to recover.

The puppies responded quickly to treatment. As their energy returned, they became active and curious, but their mother faced a much longer and more difficult recovery.

Recovery Required Separation From Her Puppies

Following two spinal surgeries, Indra needed strict crate rest, antibiotics, and careful monitoring. Her energetic puppies could not remain with her continuously because even an accidental movement could interfere with her recovery.

The separation was difficult for the mother dog. She cried for her puppies while confined, prompting her caregivers to arrange a closely supervised reunion.

When one of the puppies was brought to her, Indra immediately became more alert. Although her lower body remained paralyzed, she tried to lift herself so she could care for the puppy. Her response showed that the injury had changed her mobility, but not her instinct to nurture her family.

A Specialized Wheelchair Restored Her Mobility

Once Indra had recovered sufficiently from surgery, her rescuers began looking for a safe way to help her move independently. They obtained a specialized canine wheelchair from Canada that could support her paralyzed hindquarters while allowing her front legs to propel her forward.

Adjusting to the device took time. During her first attempts, Indra appeared uncertain and remained still rather than moving with the wheels. Her caregivers continued encouraging her as she gradually learned how the wheelchair responded to each step.

With practice, her hesitation began to disappear. Indra learned to balance, turn, and move confidently, regaining a level of freedom that her spinal injury had taken away.

Her four puppies—Emi, Emily, Daisy, and Dani—also continued to thrive. The family that had once been found cold and vulnerable was able to begin a safer chapter together, with Indra moving beside her puppies on her new wheels.

Indra’s survival was not the result of physical strength alone. Even after losing the use of half her body, she continued protecting the lives that depended on her. Her recovery also demonstrates how immediate rescue, sustained veterinary treatment, patient rehabilitation, and appropriate mobility equipment can transform the future of a severely injured animal.
