Kibo Was Barely Surviving in a Bali Market Until Help Finally Reached Him

Kibo was still alive when rescuers reached the market in Bali, but almost everything about his condition showed how close he had come to losing that fight.

The young dog was painfully thin, with ribs standing out beneath skin damaged by severe mange. Most of his fur was gone. His legs were swollen, his body was badly dehydrated, and malnutrition had left him weak enough that even standing was difficult. A call from someone at the market had brought Little Steps Matter to him, turning an ordinary sighting of a sick stray into an urgent rescue.

Rescuers believed Kibo had been abandoned and may also have been injured by a vehicle while surviving on the streets. Whatever had happened before they found him, he could no longer safely remain there. He needed veterinary care, food, shelter, and time.

The First Goal Was Simply to Stabilize Him

Kibo was taken to a veterinary clinic, where the extent of his condition became clearer. He was suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition, advanced mange, and possible injuries affecting his legs.

Treatment had to be measured carefully. His body was too depleted for an abrupt return to normal feeding, so nutrition was introduced gradually while the veterinary team monitored him. He also received fluids for dehydration, medicated baths for his damaged skin, antibiotics, and pain management.

For a puppy who had been surviving outdoors without dependable food or care, recovery could not happen overnight.

Once Kibo became stable enough to leave the clinic, he was transferred to a safe house run by Little Steps Matter. There, his world became much smaller and much safer. He had a quiet room where he could rest and access to a garden outside.

At first, he still looked fragile. His coat remained patchy, his skin needed time to heal, and his body had not yet regained the weight it had lost.

But away from the market, another side of Kibo slowly appeared.

He began showing interest in toys. His tail started wagging when caregivers approached. His appetite improved, and he became increasingly comfortable in the place that had replaced the streets.

Those changes were important because Kibo was not simply gaining weight. He was beginning to behave like a young dog again.

Weeks of Care Revealed a Different Kibo

As the weeks passed, his physical transformation became easier to see.

Healthy fur gradually covered areas that had once been bare and irritated. The swelling in his legs subsided. His body filled out as regular nutrition helped him rebuild strength and muscle.

Eventually, the trembling puppy who had struggled to stand was running around the garden.

The change was dramatic, but it came through routine care repeated day after day: meals provided in appropriate amounts, treatment for his skin, a clean place to sleep, medical supervision, and caregivers who allowed him to recover at his own pace.

Months after his rescue, Kibo was ready for another transition.

Little Steps Matter began looking for a permanent family able to give him the stability he would need beyond rehabilitation. He was ultimately adopted into a home where his difficult beginning did not define the life waiting for him.

Later images showed a dog who looked strikingly different from the one first found at the market. His coat had returned, his eyes were bright, and he could run and play with the energy that severe neglect had once taken from him. In his new home, he had regular meals, a comfortable place to rest, and a family prepared to care for him.

Kibo’s recovery was not the result of one dramatic moment. The phone call that brought rescuers to the market mattered, but what followed mattered just as much.

Someone noticed him. Rescuers responded. Veterinary professionals stabilized him. Caregivers stayed through the slow weeks of healing. And when he was ready, a family gave that recovery somewhere permanent to continue.

The dog found weak and nearly hairless on the streets of Bali did not need to become extraordinary. He only needed the chance to become healthy, safe, and fully himself again.
