Milo was standing on a rough stretch of road when rescuers first noticed him, but staying upright seemed to take nearly everything he had left. His ribs were visible beneath a dirty, uneven coat, his legs trembled, and his exhausted face suggested he had been searching for food for some time.
No one knew how long he had been wandering alone. What mattered in that moment was his condition. Milo was severely underweight and too weak to simply be left where he was.

A veterinary examination confirmed that he was severely underweight. His muscles were weak, and his overall condition showed signs of prolonged neglect. His recovery would require hydration, nutritional support, vitamins, controlled feeding, and close monitoring.
The first few days were especially important.
Rather than allowing Milo to eat as much as he wanted, caregivers divided his food into several small portions throughout the day. His body needed time to adjust to regular nutrition again.
Staff watched his appetite, energy, temperature, breathing, and response to treatment carefully.
Progress appeared in small moments.
Milo finished his first full portion of food. Later, he managed to stand without the same intense shaking that had marked his first day. Eventually, his tail moved when someone approached.
His physical improvement was gradual, but another challenge remained. Milo was still uncertain around people.
