Deep inside a narrow opening in the mountain rock, Bokdung had placed her thin body between her puppies and the insects covering their shelter. Flies moved constantly through the damp crevice, while ticks clung to the dogs’ weakened skin.
The space offered no soft bedding, warmth, or protection from the cold ground. Yet Bokdung stayed close to her babies, absorbing much of the swarm around her face as the puppies pressed against her for safety.
A Mother Dog Hidden Inside the Mountain
Rescuers found the family after looking into a deep gap between the rocks. The opening led into a cramped passage where little sunlight could reach and where movement was severely restricted.
Bokdung did not bark or show her teeth when a flashlight entered the darkness. Instead, she rested her chin against the stone and remained beside the puppies, apparently too exhausted to challenge the people approaching them.
Her condition reflected the cost of surviving in such a harsh place. She was painfully underweight, while the constant presence of parasites added another burden to an already depleted body.
Nearby, rescuers discovered that one of the puppies had not survived. The small body was found among the weeds, revealing that the mountain environment had already claimed one member of the litter.
The Puppies Were Too Weak to Fight the Insects
The surviving puppies had little ability to protect themselves from the flies and ticks. Their muscles were so weak that even brushing insects away had become difficult.
Engorged ticks were deeply attached around their ears, adding weight and irritation to their small bodies. Their eyes were also badly infected and affected by parasites.
The conditions inside the rock crevice made their suffering harder to escape. There was little room to move, no clean surface on which to rest, and no way for the puppies to leave without assistance.
Bokdung had remained their primary defense. Her body could not remove the danger, but by staying close, she continued giving the puppies what protection and warmth she could.
Rescuers Had to Dig Their Way Inside
Reaching the puppies required more than extending a hand into the opening. The tunnel twisted through packed earth and stone, preventing rescuers from clearly seeing where the animals were located.
The team carefully removed sections of soil around the entrance. An endoscopy camera was then used to examine the deeper passages and guide the rescue without causing unnecessary harm.
Working slowly, the rescuers reached into the crevice and lifted the puppies out one at a time. Covered in dirt from the underground shelter, their small bodies initially blended into the surrounding rock and soil.
Once outside, they were placed together in a secure transport box. The removal ended their immediate exposure to the insects inside the cave, but it created a new challenge: Bokdung was still loose on the mountain.
Bokdung Refused to Leave Without Her Babies
After the puppies were taken from the crevice, Bokdung became distressed. She moved along the mountain ridges and through the trees, searching for the babies who had suddenly disappeared from the only nursery they had known.
Attempting to chase her would have been dangerous. A frightened dog could easily retreat farther into the woods, making capture more difficult and potentially separating her permanently from the surviving litter.
The rescuers instead prepared a capture net in the yard of a nearby villager. The resident had previously left small amounts of food for Bokdung, making the property one of the few places she might approach voluntarily.
The team waited for her to come down from the mountain. Eventually, hunger brought the exhausted mother into the yard.
When she entered the prepared area, the net was pulled around her. Bokdung struggled briefly, but her weakened legs soon gave way, allowing the rescuers to secure her without pursuing her through the wilderness.
The Family Reunited Away From the Cave
With Bokdung safely captured, the separation between mother and puppies ended. The family could finally be transported away from the mountain together.
At the veterinary clinic, bright examination lights revealed the full extent of the parasites and dirt covering them. Medical workers began the careful process of removing ticks and treating the puppies’ irritated eyes.
The cleaning required patience. Parasites embedded in sensitive areas could not simply be brushed away, and the dogs’ fragile condition demanded gentle handling throughout the procedure.
Despite their discomfort, Bokdung and the puppies remained quiet while the team worked. Their lack of resistance allowed caregivers to clean their skin, address their eyes, and begin replacing the neglect of the mountain with structured treatment.
A Safe Home for Bokdung and Her Surviving Puppy
Bokdung and her surviving puppy eventually left the clinic for a permanent home. A patient family took them in together, giving the mother the security of remaining close to the baby she had fought to protect.
Their new environment bears no resemblance to the damp opening in the rocks. Instead of lying on packed dirt while insects swarmed around them, they now sleep on padded beds inside a clean home.
Bokdung no longer needs to use her body as a barrier against flies, ticks, cold winds, and exposed mountain conditions. Her puppy can rest without parasites gathering around its ears and eyes.
The rescue succeeded because the team addressed every part of the crisis rather than removing only the most accessible animals. They reached into the narrow tunnel, protected the puppies, waited patiently for Bokdung, and ensured that the family left the mountain together.
Bokdung’s story is defined not only by what she endured, but by what she continued doing while her own strength disappeared. In one of the harshest places imaginable, the mountain stray remained beside her babies until human hands finally reached the darkness and carried them all toward safety.
