Caitlyn was naturally friendly, but the cruelty inflicted on her left her unable to perform the most basic actions a dog depends on for survival. Thick tape had been wrapped tightly around her snout, preventing her from opening her mouth to bark, drink or cool herself by panting.

Caitlyn also loved chasing a favorite ball around the yard, even on rainy mornings. These everyday activities showed that her life was no longer centered on pain, surgery or survival.

 The Man Responsible Was Denied Parole

As Caitlyn continued healing, the legal consequences of the abuse also moved forward. The man responsible admitted to authorities that he had taped her snout because she was barking.

His explanation confirmed that the restraint had been applied deliberately rather than resulting from an accident. According to the account of Caitlyn’s case, a parole board later voted unanimously to deny him parole.

The decision could not undo the injuries Caitlyn had suffered. It did, however, acknowledge the seriousness of the act that had left her unable to drink, pant or call for help.
