The Animal Everyone Feared Was a Wolf Turned Out to Be a Dog Fighting to Survive

At first glance, the animal wandering through a Los Angeles neighborhood hardly looked like someone’s dog. Her body was painfully thin, much of her coat was damaged or missing, and her gray, weathered appearance led people to wonder whether a wolf was roaming the streets.

When Hope For Paws received a message about the unusual animal, rescuers went to investigate. What they found was not a dangerous wild creature, but a severely neglected female dog who desperately needed medical care.

She would later be named Julia. Before anyone knew her name, however, rescuers had to convince her that getting close to people was safe.

A Rope Around Her Neck Told Part of the Story

Julia was eventually contained inside a gated yard, giving rescuers a chance to approach without risking her disappearing into the neighborhood again.

Up close, her condition was even more troubling. She was extremely underweight, her skin was damaged, and painful problems with her paws made walking difficult. An old, fraying rope remained tied around her neck, suggesting that she had once been restrained or belonged to someone, though exactly what happened before she appeared on the street was unknown.

Despite her condition, Julia was gentle.

Rescuers began earning her trust with food, offering small pieces while staying patient and avoiding sudden movements. Hunger eventually overcame some of her hesitation. She carefully accepted the food without snapping at the hands holding it.

That gave the team the opportunity they needed.

A leash was slipped around Julia’s neck, and she was slowly guided toward the rescue vehicle. As she walked, her limp made the extent of her discomfort impossible to miss. Still, she followed.

The hardest part of her life was not over, but she was finally leaving the street behind.

At the veterinary clinic, an examination showed just how much her body had endured. Julia was suffering from mange, bacterial infections, and severe malnutrition. Her overgrown nails and swollen paws added to the discomfort she was already experiencing.

Treatment began with the basic things her body had been missing: medical attention, proper nutrition, rest, and a safe place to recover. She also received medicated baths for her damaged skin.

During one of those baths, the fragile animal who had looked almost wild on the street stood quietly while caregivers washed away dirt and treated her irritated skin.

There was still a long road ahead.

Weeks of Care Revealed a Completely Different Dog

Julia’s recovery came gradually.

As she received consistent treatment and food, her body began filling out. Her skin improved, fur returned, and the pain that had made movement difficult began to ease.

Within about a month, the change was already visible. Julia had enough strength to run through grass and chase a large blue ball. The dog who had once limped toward a rescue vehicle was beginning to play.

By roughly three months after the rescue, her transformation was striking. A thick coat had replaced the sparse, unhealthy fur of her first days, and her once-prominent bones were no longer visible beneath a starving frame. She was energetic, social, and comfortable around other dogs.

Even the mystery surrounding her wolf-like appearance eventually received an answer. Later reporting on DNA results identified Julia as a German Shepherd and Siberian Husky mix—not the wild wolf people had feared when she was first spotted.

Her recovery also led somewhere permanent.

After Julia had healed, A.R.T N Paws Animal Rescue helped place her with the Snook family, giving her the stable home that had been missing from the beginning of her story.

The contrast was remarkable without needing exaggeration. Julia went from wandering the streets underweight, injured, and mistaken for a wild animal to running, playing, and living as someone’s companion.

Her appearance had once made people hesitate.

Fortunately, someone looked closer.

Behind the damaged coat, the rope, and the frightening first impression was simply a dog in need of help—and once she received it, Julia finally had the chance to show who she had been all along.
