
The tiny white puppy was rolling helplessly on the pavement when a passerby noticed him. His body twitched with neurological convulsions, and he was small enough to fit in one hand. Bystanders said he had been born with serious abnormalities, rejected by his mother, and later kicked aside near the road.
The rescuer wrapped him in a soft blanket and drove directly to an animal hospital. At the clinic, the puppy became unusually quiet as the medical team examined him.
Tests revealed hydrocephalus, a dangerous buildup of fluid inside the brain that was creating pressure and disrupting his nervous system. His condition was critical, and veterinarians warned that his chances were poor. Without surgery, he was unlikely to survive.
The rescuer chose to proceed and named him Qi Zai, after a movie character associated with magical powers. The name carried one hope: that the fragile puppy might still have a future.
Surgery Was Only the Beginning
Veterinarians performed brain surgery to relieve the pressure. The operation succeeded, but Qi Zai’s recovery remained uncertain. His white coat had been shaved, leaving a prominent incision across his head, and he was moved into intensive care.
After surgery, Qi Zai often produced unusual cries caused by neurological damage. The veterinary team explained that the sounds were involuntary rather than clear signs of pain.
Hospital staff offered comfort alongside medical care. Nurses held him and rocked him to sleep. His rescuer visited after work every day, and Qi Zai gradually learned to recognize that familiar presence and seek touch.

His treatment included daily laser therapy to reduce inflammation and support healing. Wearing protective goggles, the puppy remained remarkably still. He also received hyperbaric oxygen therapy to increase the oxygen reaching his recovering brain.
Pressure on his cerebellum had weakened his front legs so severely that they could not support him. Staff used massage, stretching, and mobility exercises to stimulate his nerves and muscles. Veterinarians considered the first six months after surgery especially important for his long-term movement.
Small Changes Revealed a Growing Personality
The pressure affecting Qi Zai’s eyes began to decrease. At first, he struggled to open them fully, but gradually he started watching the people around him and tracking a nurse’s moving fingers.
His appetite became another encouraging sign. Early meals had to be delivered as liquids through a syringe. Later, he learned to eat wet food mixed with chicken puree and consumed it eagerly. Standard kibble received a different response: Qi Zai simply kept his mouth closed.

That preference amused the staff, but it also showed that he was becoming more alert and expressive. He was no longer only a critical patient. His individual habits were beginning to emerge.
A soft plush toy made the long hours in intensive care less empty. Qi Zai curled against it, pawed at it, and slept with it nearby while his body healed.
Then his front legs began to respond.
With daily stretching and massage, Qi Zai developed enough strength to press his paws into the bedding. He scratched forward, tried to lift his chest, and made determined attempts to support himself. The movements were unsteady, but they marked a major change from the puppy who had once been unable to control his body on the roadside.

Qi Zai’s recovery was still ongoing. He had not reached full mobility, and the lasting effects of his condition remained uncertain. Yet he was alert, eating, responding to affection, and actively trying to move.
His survival did not come from surgery alone. It depended on the passerby who stopped, the medical team that treated a complex neurological condition, and the people who returned each day to hold, feed, stretch, and encourage him.
Qi Zai began life unwanted and unable to stand. By the end of his documented journey, he was pushing against the bedding with his own paws—small movements, but entirely his own.
