Jordan was sitting on a discarded plastic bag at the bottom of the Los Angeles River when rescuers first saw him. The small puppy barely moved. One of his back legs was missing, his skin was raw from mange, and even the faint sounds he made revealed how much pain he was in.
An eyewitness had reported a horrifying act of abuse: a man had cut off the puppy’s leg and thrown him roughly 30 feet into the concrete channel. Jordan survived the fall, then remained there for two days with no way to climb the steep walls around him.
Volunteers from L.A. on Cloud 9 spotted him and called Hope For Paws for emergency help. By then, the puppy was malnourished, infected, and so weak that every additional hour placed him at greater risk.
A Basket Lifted Him Out of the Riverbed
Eldad Hagar climbed down into the channel with the rescue team. Jordan did not try to run. He had little strength left, but he still responded to gentle touch, allowing the rescuers to move close enough to examine him.
The open wound where his leg had been severed required extreme care. Rather than attempt the difficult climb while carrying him by hand, the team placed Jordan inside a basket. People waiting above slowly raised him up the concrete wall.
For the first time since he had been thrown into the river, Jordan was moving toward safety.

He was rushed to an emergency veterinary hospital, where doctors found more than the visible injury. He was suffering from severe mange, bacterial infections, and malnutrition. His condition was so critical that the veterinary team considered it remarkable that he had survived at all.
The first days focused on stabilizing him. He received fluids, medication, nutritious food, and a careful bath to clean his damaged skin. Because his body was dangerously weak, he also needed a blood transfusion before he could safely undergo surgery.
Four days after his rescue, veterinarians operated on the injured limb. The procedure gave the remaining tissue a chance to heal properly, but surgery was only one stage of a much longer recovery.

Jordan now had to rebuild his strength while learning how to move through the world on three legs.
The Puppy Beneath the Pain Returned
In foster care with Lisa Chiarelli, Jordan finally had a quiet place to recover. He also had two canine companions, Lola and Frankie, who welcomed him into their routine and treated him like a younger brother.
At first, his days revolved around rest, follow-up appointments, and healing. Once his stitches were removed, his caregivers celebrated with a mango cake. It was a small milestone, but it marked how far he had come from the silent puppy stranded on the riverbed.
Physical therapy helped Jordan develop balance and strength. Losing a leg changed the way he moved, but it did not take away his desire to explore. As his body recovered, the frightened stillness disappeared. He began playing tug-of-war, chasing the other dogs, and testing just how quickly three legs could carry him.
Before long, Jordan was running freely and even swimming. His missing limb became part of his life rather than the limit of it.

The puppy who had once been unable to lift himself from a plastic bag grew into an energetic dog with a playful, determined personality. He eventually left foster care for a permanent home, where another dog and a guinea pig became part of his new family.
Jordan’s recovery did not undo the cruelty he experienced. It showed what became possible after people chose to respond to it—with urgent medical treatment, patient rehabilitation, and a home willing to see more than his injuries.
At the bottom of the canal, Jordan had been left without a path out. The rescuers who lifted that basket gave him one, and he spent the rest of his recovery proving how eagerly he could follow it.
